How to Evolve Montabi at Levels 5 and 10

Plan evolution breakpoints so your decks spike before elites—not in the middle of an X Gang fight.

How to Evolve Creatures

Evolution is Montabi’s main power spike for individual creatures. Each Montabi species can evolve at level 5 and again at level 10, transforming its stats and deck contents—new attacks, upgraded blocks, or utility cards replace or augment earlier cards. Evolution is permanent for that Montabi on the current run and interacts with everything else you have learned: 3×3 positioning, 4-card draws, 3 AP with carryover, and the Trainer must stay alive for the run to continue.

Read Getting Started for leveling basics and Combat & Positioning to know which new cards belong in front row versus back row. How to Tame Montabi explains when fresh captures are worth evolving at all.

Level 5 versus level 10

First evolution (level 5) usually turns a fragile starter into a credible lane holder or adds your first real finisher. It is the breakpoint most players hit before the first serious elite on a typical route. Schedule a Cafe or shop stop right after if the evolution adds costly high-AP cards—you may need deck thinning at Stickards.

Second evolution (level 10) is a late-route spike aimed at X Gang bosses and late elites. Cards at this stage often redefine your role split: a Montabi that was purely defensive might gain AoE damage, or a glass cannon might gain self-shielding. Check the Tier List for species whose stage-two forms stay S-tier in Builds.

How evolution changes decks

Montabi use personal decks. Evolution does not merge decks with your Trainer or partner Montabi. When you evolve:

  • Some base cards upgrade in place (same name, better numbers).
  • Some cards replace older versions entirely.
  • New keywords may appear—read them before the next fight.

After evolving, your next turn still draws four cards and grants 3 AP, but the hand contents changed overnight. Play one safe normal node to feel the new curve before clicking an elite pin on the map.

When to trigger evolution on the map

Evolution prompts typically appear when a Montabi hits the level threshold and you are on the city map or at a rest node. Good times to confirm evolution:

  • After a heal or shop when you can remove obsolete low-tier cards.
  • Before a stretch of three or more combat nodes if the evolution adds immediate impact cards.
  • Not immediately before a boss if the evolution adds unplayable high-AP setup pieces—unless the boss guide’s checklist says you need that spike.

Bad times:

  • Right before an elite when you have not tested new targeting lines on the grid.
  • When your Montabi is injured or carrying temporary debuffs—fix KO and injury issues first.
  • When biscuits were just spent on a replacement tame you have not leveled yet.

Trainer and item interactions

Student, Fighter, and Chef Trainers from Trainers buff different card types. An evolution that adds “strike” tags might suddenly synergize with Fighter cards you ignored earlier. Passive Items that care about evolution stage or species type also flip on—re-scan your inventory after each evolution.

Some consumables grant bonus XP; save them for Montabi close to 5 or 10 if you want to hit breakpoints before a known boss gate. Tools help track level distance without manual notes.

Two-Montabi party planning

Because only two Montabi fight, evolve the pair you will bring to the X Gang finale, not a bench project. Common plan:

  1. Primary carry —evolve first at 5, push to 10 on the main damage or anchor Montabi.
  2. Flex slot —evolve at 5 when the route demands utility (heal, debuff cleanse, second blocker).
  3. Bench —only evolve if you expect swaps due to injuries from missed three-turn revives.

If both Montabi evolve at 5 on the same node, your next fight might lack block and damage at the same time—stagger evolutions one fight apart when possible.

Evolution and taming together

A freshly tamed Montabi may be close to level 5 if you captured it late. Decide whether to invest evolutions in the tame or in your original starter. Rule of thumb: evolve whoever has the better stage-two tier list rank and fewer injuries. Skipping evolution on a new tame and using it as a bench body is valid on biscuit-heavy routes.

Boss and elite checkpoints

Use evolution as a gear check marker:

  • Pre-first elite: at least one Montabi at level 5 unless you speedrun with god-tier cards.
  • Mid route: both active Montabi at 5, one approaching 10.
  • Pre-X Gang boss: both at 10 or close, decks thinned, Trainer HP stable.

Details on telegraphs and phases sit in How to Beat Bosses; evolution supplies the raw AP-efficient answers those phases demand.

City nodes that help evolution pacing

Cafe and convenience stores stabilize HP so you can take XP fights safely. Stickards remove dead cards that evolution made obsolete. Random events sometimes offer XP or evolution bonuses—evaluate them with the same boss timeline in mind. Full node list: City Map & Events.

Mistakes to avoid

Evolving both Montabi before learning new cards. Play one sparring fight.

Ignoring deck bloat after evolution. Old 1-AP strikes that no longer scale should be removed when possible.

Bench evolutions. Resources spent on a Montabi you never field do not help Trainer survival.

Forgetting injuries. Injury cards persist through evolution; clean decks via shops when the game allows.

Evolution at 5 and 10 is your roguelike power curve. Align those spikes with city services, keep the Trainer safe on the grid, and your party will arrive at X Gang bosses with hands that match the fight—not starter decks pretending to be endgame.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Montabi questions.

At what levels do Montabi evolve?

Montabi evolve at level 5 and again at level 10.

Does evolution change a Montabi's deck?

Yes. Evolutions add, upgrade, or replace cards in that Montabi's personal deck.

Can I evolve mid-battle?

Evolution triggers from leveling on the map or at rest nodes, not during the 3×3 combat itself.

Should both Montabi evolve at the same time?

Stagger evolutions when possible so you can test new cards and keep one familiar hand for the next fight.

Do evolutions help against X Gang bosses?

Yes. Level 10 forms are tuned for late-route bosses; plan them before the final X Gang gate.
